Lisburn Probus marks its 40th anniversary

Attended by some 120 people, the service was conducted by newly-instituted rector the Rev Jason Kernohan.

Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Thomas Beckett, and his wife, were among the congregation, the Mayor participating by reading a lesson.

Special guest Edwin Dunlop, was instrumental in setting up the first Probus club in Ireland in 1971.

A spokesperson said: “Friendship and fellowship were well reflected in the hymns and prayers in the service and were at the heart of Rev Kernohan’s thoughtful address.”

President of Lisburn Probus, Freddie Hall, expressed members’ delight at being able to hold the service in Eglantine church.

He said: “We hold our weekly meetings in Lisburn Golf Club so Eglantine is really our home church.”

He went on to thank the rector and selectvestry for their welcome and help in preparing for the service.

“It was good to join with family and friends and with members of Eglantine Parish to give thanks for the Club’s 40 years’ existence in Lisburn,” he added.

Probus clubs exist to provide a meeting place for friendship and fellowship amongst people who are in retirement.

They have a close connection with the Rotary community.

Representatives of Rotary and of other Probus clubs attended and were warmly welcomed by the President.

After the service, there was an opportunity for members and guests to chat and reminisce over refreshments in the Church Hall.
