Midas Jewellers’ proprietor, Jim Conlon, took the decision to open early to ride the wave of positive consumer sentiment, and is hopeful that contrary to reports of mayhem and mania, this year’s discount day can only help put the sparkle back into independent retail sales.

Speaking yesterday, Jim Conlon, said: “As is the case with all independent retailers, there can sometimes be the perception that we lose out to the major stores when it comes to discount days like Black Friday however, this year we’re taking the view that a day designed to bring consumers out onto the high streets can only impact positively for all involved.

“Consumer confidence is on the up again but that doesn’t mean people don’t like a bargain. We’ve noticed a 20% increase in spend among our customers this year as well as earlier Christmas footfall but days like Black Friday should be welcomed by the smaller retailers rather than dismissed because it will give us all the added boost we need.

“We’re expecting tomorrow to be a great day for Lisburn high street – and of course for consumers hunting the best deals.”
