Lisburn unit helps cut crime

A Lisburn Reducing Offending Unit is playing its part in saving Northern Ireland society more than £3 million.

Reducing Offending in Partnership is a provincewide approach to managing priority or prolific offenders,

Partners, the NI Probation Board, PSNI, NI Prison Service and Youth Justice Agency, aim to tackle prolific offenders who impact most upon the community. The Lisburn unit, one of nine in Northern Ireland, deals with 25 offenders - 24 adults and one young person.

“The results of the evaluation are extremely encouraging and reinforce the benefits of collaborative working,” said T/Assistant Chief Constable Chris Noble.

“All public sector organisations are facing financial pressures and programmes such as Reducing Offending in Partnership provide a mechanism to harness the combined strength of the resources that exist across statutory and voluntary agencies to deal with issues that exist within the community.”

Reducing Offending Units make more than 2,000 arrests per year in relation to those who continue to offend.
