FOLLOWING the production of biker guides which were distributed through the Motorcycle News, Causeway Coast & Glens Tourism Partnership has been approached by two two operators - Discovery Travel from GB and MTS Reisen from Switzerland who are interested in developing biker packages into north Antrim.

A representative from Discovery Travel recently visited Northern Ireland on a familiarisation trip.

Rare plants

EFFORTS are being made to protect a rare plant in Glenariff Glen.

The area is currently the subject of a declaration to make it an Area of Special Scientific Interest.

A Northern Ireland Environment Agency report said: ‘The extensive spray-zone around Ess-na-Larach waterfall has one of the best-developed communities of bryophytes associated with humid ravine habitats in north-eastern Ireland.

‘Two rare bryophytes are found on the steep basault rocks around the waterfall including Ragged Notchwort which is listed as critically endangered in the Irish Bryophyte Red Data Book.

‘It was first recorded in Ireland in 1969 at Glenariff Glen and the site remains the only knock location for this species in Ireland.

‘The other rare species is Rigid Apple-moss which is listed as vulnerable in the Irish Bryophyte Red Data Book. Glenariff Glen hosts the only known extant population of this species in Northern Ireland with only one other historical record in County Fermanagh in 1961 which has not been relocated.’
