Lisheeghan resurfacing scheme to commence

BALLYMONEY Sinn Féin Councillor Daithí McKay has welcomed the commitment to carry out a carriageway resurfacing scheme on Lisheeghan Road in Rasharkin during this financial year.

The issue was raised during an Assembly Question when the Minister for Regional Development was asked what works Roads Service plans to carry out on the Lisheeghan Road, Rasharkin and how much money will be allocated for this work in (a) 2010/11; and (b) 2011/12.

In response, the Minister explained: "My Department's Roads Service has advised that a carriageway resurfacing scheme to remove the worst stretches of the undulations on the Lisheegan Road, Rasharkin is programmed for this financial year. Roads Service intends to improve approximately 1.2 kilometres of the Lisheegan Road, however, the exact cost of this work is not known at this stage of the scheme.

"Roads Service's resurfacing programme for 2011/2012 has not been finalised. However, it is unlikely that further resurfacing work on the Lisheegan Road will be afforded a high priority."

In response Mr McKay, who has been lobbying to have the road resurfaced since he was elected to council added: "I have met and talked with Roads Service officials on numerous occasions in the past five years about the neglect and disrepair of Lisheeghan Road and I am glad that it is now bearing fruition.

"The Regional Development Minister has confirmed to me that a carriageway resurfacing scheme to remove the worst stretches of the road will be carried out during this financial year. The intention is to carry out work to improve approximately 1.2kilometres (just under half) of the road.

"I have outlined to Roads Service the importance of making improvements to two particular short stretches of the road and would again urge them to ensure that this forms part of the programme of work for this financial year.

"This work has been long awaited by local residents and I hope that it is now carried out to their satisfaction."
