Lismore pupilstake to the slopes

The students, from years 9-13, spent almost a week in the resort of Andalo, Italy.

For some, it was their first ski trip and a chance to put into practice what they had learnt on the artificial slope in Craigavon; for others it was a welcome return to the slopes and an opportunity to tackle some of the more difficult
runs.

There was plenty of snow for the start of the week and regular downfalls throughout kept the runs fresh and varied.

The students were accompanied by teachers Mr Francis McVeigh, Mrs Cathy Loney, Mrs Bronagh Hughes and retired science teacher Mr Gary Dean.

The days began early, with students on the slopes for 9am and four hours of tuition spread throughout the day.

In the evenings, the emphasis was on fun, with activities including ice kart racing, an arcade night, pizza night, talent night and a quiz night.

On the final day, students and teachers enjoyed a tour of Verona where they saw Juliet’s Balcony, from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, and fitted in some shopping before their flight home.

Organiser Mr McVeigh said, “On our return we carried out an evaluation and students were asked what the low point of the trip was. One student commented ‘having to come home’, which illustrates the success and the enjoyment students experienced during their time away.

“Students have gained immensely from this ski trip; they have many positive and cherished memories that they will carry with them in the months and years ahead.”
