The Londonderry MP made the comments after attending the Young Enterprise Foyle Trade Fair.

Mr Durkan said: “This is a great opportunity to give students the chance to learn more about enterprise and commerce.

“They get a real-life insight into the world and practice of business and clearly enjoy the experience.

“It is great to see young people inspired and equipped with new business skills which will enhance their self-confidence.”

The Londonderry MP said that whilst academic achievement is important, local employers are on the look out for candidates who can demonstrate other skills and aptitudes, learned outside the classroom, lecture hall and library.

The Londonderry SDLP MP explained: “Employers today feel that academic success alone is not enough and they are increasingly looking to students who can demonstrate other skills like team-working, leadership and communication skills.

“The students have had the opportunity to put what they have learned in the classroom into practice by creating, promoting and selling a product of their choice.”

He continued: “The different companies and diversity of products on offer provide encouraging signs of innovation and collaboration.”

The former SDLP leader, Finance Minister and Deputy First Minister said he was impressed with both the students taking part and the Young Enterprise group which organised the endeavour.

He explained: “I am a strong supporter of Young Enterprise which is doing so much to encourage a culture of entrepreneurship in our schools and colleges throughout the North.”

“Indeed the enthusiasm of all the students who have taken part in this year’s Foyle Trade Fair is the best endorsement of Young Enterprise’s work,” he concluded.
