Littering concern

A LOUGH Road woman has hit out at the amount of litter around the town.

Sheelagh McGuigan said she is sick of the rubbish as she walks along the Lough Road and William Street.

The voluntary worker said it was ridiculous the amount of litter, particularly around the train station.

"Someone needs to take the responsibility and clear this up," she said.

"Sure who wants to stop in Lurgan when the first thing you see is the mountain of litter around the station."

Blue bags, empty bottles, crisp packets and papers are strewn around the area beside the train tracks between the level crossing.

"I've been into the station and asked why nobody has cleared this away and they don't want to know.

"If it was my place of work I would have a little extra bit of pride in its appearance - for all it would take to clean it up."

Mrs McGuigan also said she is concerned over the frequency of street cleaners on the Lough Road and William Street areas.

"I have noticed the problem is getting worse - there seems to be rubbish everywhere and no one is cleaning it up," said Mrs McGuigan.

The council said it keeps a 'close-eye' on litter on William Street and the Lough Road.

A spokeswoman said: "It is one of the town's busiest thoroughfares and it is cleaned every morning.

"Victoria Street is also swept three times a week, we are very aware of the problem and keep a close-eye on it."

A spokeswoman for Translink said the transport company was working to address the problem around the station.

She said: "We are working with community groups and have put up additional fencing to address the issue of littering on the tracks.

"We condemn all anti-social behaviour and appeal to the public to act responsibly when using and around public transport.

"Translink operates a cash reward scheme offering up to 1,000 to any member of the public who witness any incident of trespass, vandalism and is prepared to give evidence in court, resulting in a conviction.

"We therefore encourage people to report incidents of vandalism to the company."
