Lives were saved thanks to ‘good samaritans’

The brave individuals who alerted an elderly couple to fire at their Moss Road home have been called ‘good

samaritans’ by Councillor for the area, Paul Givan MLA.

Mr Givan said he was in no doubt that “the brave actions of those passing by who stopped and acted quickly to wake up the couple and tried to put the fire out saved their lives”.

He went on: “The individuals who acted as good samaritans also suffered injury from the fire and they deserve the highest praise for putting themselves at risk.

“I trust they have a speedy recovery.

“The support of family and friends will be a great source of comfort and strength to those who in their twilight years of life deserve a quiet life but instead were subjected to a despicable attack on their home that could have taken their lives.”

Mr Givan added: “The people responsible for this mindless act need to be brought before the courts and face the consequences of their actions.

“I have spoken with the police about this incident, which they are taking very seriously.

“I would appeal for members of the public who may have witnessed individuals in the area acting suspiciously at this time to contact the police and help them with their investigation.”

Jonathan Craig, Lagan Valley MLA and a member of the Policing Board, said he was absolutely disgusted by the attack.

“Having spoken to the residents, “ he said, “it is an absolute marvel that someone was not killed, as the bungalow was completely filled with smoke by the time the couple were rescued by neighbours.

“I have spoken to the local Area Commander of the PSNI about the incident and also about the number of other anti-social problems – windows being broken and properties being damaged in the area.

“I have made it clear that this must become a top priority for the local police in Lisburn and the individuals who carried out this attack must be caught before this ends with fatalities. ”

The Lagan Valley MLA blamed what he called “a dangerous mix of low-class drugs and alcohol” for contributing generally to problems of anti-social behaviour and “causing mayhem in the community”.
