Local actors put their best foot forward for blood donation appeal

North Coast Theatre Productions took time out from rehearsals for this year’s youth production of “Footloose” to encourage others to get involved and donate blood at Baptist Church Hall, Abbey Street on Monday and Tuesday, 22 and 23 January, 1.30 - 4pm and 5.15 - 8pm.

Musical director for “Footloose”, Adele Davies, has a personal interest in the subject – from her own experience.

Adele said: “I would not be here now if it were not for blood donations. I was ill last year and without transfusions I might not even have been alive, let alone working with the crew on Footloose.

“Everybody should donate. It could save someone’s life, just like it helped me.”

Una Culkin plays Rev Moore’s wife in “Footloose” and not only was she at rehearsals; she stopped off to donate a pint of blood on the way.

Una said: “Tonight I donated my 33rd pint of blood at Portrush Town Hall on my way to rehearsals. It only takes a few minutes and it can have the most important effect on another person’s life.

“Both my parents gave blood and I followed their example. I always say everybody who can give blood should give blood. It is an easy way to help save someone’s life.”

The Rotary Club of Coleraine is supporting the blood donation sessions and president Milne Rowntree said: “January is a difficult month for the emergency services. Hospitals always experience a rise in demand for transfusions.

“The Blood Transfusion Service is encouraging all able people in Coleraine to donate a pint of blood next week. New donors and existing donors - your help is needed now. Remember, if you have ever thought of donating blood and saving someone’s life, now would be a great time to start.”

The final word goes to “Footloose” director Victoria Lagan and her cast.

Victoria said: “Several members of the cast are active blood donors and we all ask everyone reading this article to go and give blood, and bring along their friends. Remember – Give Blood. Save Lives.”
