Local care workers reach the final of top awards

TWO local care workers have reached the finals of the prestigious NI Independent Care Awards for 2010.

Joan Telford and John Moore of Mears Care NI are both through with Joan, the branch manager in Mears Care NI in Lisburn, a finalist in the 'Domiciliary Care Manager' category, with John, a care worker, a finalist in the 'Domiciliary Carer' category.

A heartfelt nomination from the family of one of John's patients reads "John's ability to care for my father and meet his individual needs was often beyond the call of duty." John recently became something of a hero when he evacuated an elderly man after a fire broke out.

Joan's nomination came as a result of the person-centred care system which she operates, and her unique combination of passion, calmness and ethical sense.

All the finalists, along with their colleagues and residents, are looking forward to the awards, which will take place at the Ramada Hotel, Shaw's Bridge on December 1.

Nominations for the awards were received from residents, clients, relatives, owners, managers, other staff and members of the public.

"We have been inundated with almost 300 nominations," said Eddy Kerr, Chair of Independent Health and Care Providers (IHCP). "It was a tough task for the judges in selecting the finalists and choosing a winner. The quality of the nominations received highlighted the high standards of carers in the sector. Everyone is looking forward to a great night of celebration."
