Local children launch science initiative

WHITEHEAD'S young boffins have their thinking hats on as they prepare for an annual science challenge.

Pupils from Whitehead Primary School helped launch the fifth Northern Bank Science Counts initiative. It is aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils and divided into two categories:

The Small Schools programme involves an initial workshop and brand new interactive demonstration show to be conducted by W5’s outreach team at the school, followed by a visit to the Belfast venue to participate in a Maths Problem Solvers Challenge.

The Large Schools Programme will take place in W5 with the Maths Problem Solvers Challenge, followed by an exploration of 200 interactive exhibits.

Jim Loughins, Whitehead PS Principal, commented: “Teachers love to see opportunities to stimulate pupils and bring such important subjects to life in a new way. I know my pupils will benefit not only from the visit but also the problem-solving workshop.”

Primary schools will receive a form by post inviting them apply to become a Science Counts School. Small schools can make a joint application if necessary. Application forms will also be available from local branches of the bank.

The closing date for applications is Friday 8 October.
