Local companies enjoy life among the stars

Five Lisburn businesses were among some 70 Northern Ireland companies to pick up gold stars in this year’s Great Taste Awards recently.

Also among the awards, announced by the UK Guild of Fine Food, were companies in Carryduff, Dromara and Dromore. Between them, Northern Ireland companies collected 200 gold stars.

Two stars went to Lisburn’s Mama Cata Farm, for single origin coffee from Panama. One each went to Lisburn producers Brambleberry Jam, for sea-salted caramel jam; Hilden Brewery, for Buck’s Head ale and Headless Dog ale; Passion Preserved, for spiced damson jelly and Pure Roast Coffee, for signature coffee and Swiss water decaff coffee.

Also awarded one star each were Farmhouse Treats, Carryduff, for butter shortbread; Abernethy Butter, Dromara, for dulse and sea-salt butter; and in Dromore, Graham’s Bakery, for coffee and oatmeal bites; KraziBaker, for shortbread biscuits and MA Quail, for dry-aged sirloin steak;

Food NI Chief Executive Michele Shirlow said the results showcased the quality, innovation and outstanding taste of Northern Ireland food and drink. The competition drew entries from virtually every part of the British Isles and other parts of Europe. Judges included Masterchef judge and food critic Charles Campion; TV presenter and cook, Aggie Mackenzie; Great British Bake-Off winner, Frances Quinn; Masterchef the Professionals finalist, Adam Handling; food buyers from Harrods, Selfridges, Waitrose and M& S and chefs including James Golding, Chef Director of The Pig hotel group.
