Local countryside inspires new fashion collection

Fashion student Sarah Walker has taken inspiration from her Lisburn countryside home for her final collection, on display at next week's University of Ulster catwalk show.

Sarah has designed nine pieces of active wear for the showcase, which she made by knitting together specialist yarns to create unique, progressive materials.

“This is a knitwear collection for activities such as yoga,” she said.

“I was inspired by the countryside around my home and things like water and trees.

“I am really interested in textiles and how material feels and performs rather than just how it looks.

“I knit the specialist yarns together to make a pioneering material that is really pushing the boundaries.

“There is more of an engineering side to me and I am interested in what the material can actually do.

“It’s more about performance rather than the look.”

Sarah will have five outfits, made up of nine pieces, in next week’s showcase, which will be held at the Europa Hotel in Belfast on Thursday, May 26.

“Everything is coming together now,” she said. “I am more excited than nervous.

“It is going to be a great evening to celebrate the work of all the students.”

Looking to the future, Sarah is hoping to go to New York to work for a year in the city that has become known as the fashion capital of the world.

“I was in New York last summer with a fashion designer and I made some contacts there,” she said.

“I hope to go back there for a year. It is so exciting in New York.”
