Local families unable to attend Kylie's big day

A Coleraine mum has spoken of her deep disappointment at missing her daughter's dream wedding in Cyprus because of the chaos caused by the volcanic ash cloud currently disrupting air travel.

County Hall civil servant, Kylie Walls (35) and fiance Darren Dickson (37) will get married at 2pm in the Town Hall at Larnaca on Tuesday - with many members of their families missing the special occasion.

Kylie's mother, Thelma Walls, who lives in James Street, said the family were heartbroken that they could not be there for the couple's big day.

"We are gutted, but there are worst things that could happen.

"Obviously Kylie is very, very disappointed that her father will not be there to give her away, but there is nothing we can do about it."

Thelma said that some friends would be there to share in the occasion but many family members would miss out - including the best man.

"Kylie and Darren flew out there last Wednesday with four other friends.

"Kenny and myself, Darren's mother Maisie and sister Hayley, the best man, John Black and his wife Tina were all meant to fly out there on Friday.

"The only thing Kylie took with her was her wedding dress which was vaccum packed and taken on to the plane as hand luggage.

"We were meant to bring out a lot of other things like her bouquet, shoes, tiara, all her favours and the place setting for the meal afterwards. She has been forced to go out and buy everything again out there."

The Walls family, who attended their son Stephen's wedding some ten years ago, hope that Kylie's day will go according to plan.

"They will get married at the Town Hall in Larnaca at 2pm and hold their reception in the Sun Hall Hotel afterwards.

"The wedding planner was in touch this morning to say that some flights were starting up and they could maybe delay the wedding. But we have no way of getting there with all the UK flights being cancelled.

"What can you do? We're hoping that Kylie will e-mail us a picture back home afterwards."
