Local firefighters unveil shocking pictures showing how a closed door could save your life

In a bid to encourage locals to close internal doors in their homes when going to sleep at night, Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service's western division have shared some images of just how big a difference they can make, if a fire should take hold in their family home.

Internal doors, they said, “will hold back flames for up to 30-45 minutes depending on the quality of your door” in the case of a fire.

But as well as this, having a door between you an a raging fire can also minimise the amount of smoke inhaled in such a situation: “Only a small amount of smoke will escape the room, enough to activate your smoke alarms, provided they are in full working order”.

And the final thing that closing doors to unoccupied rooms will do - is significantly reduce damage to the rest of your property as the fire could in some cases be contained long enough for the Fire Service to reach your home and put it out, before it spreads to other rooms.

“A vital part of any bedtime routine,” said NIFRS Western Division about a small change that could save your life.
