Local firm wins £13m contract for airport

Local civil engineering firm Whitemountain has won a £13m contract to work on the redevelopment of London Luton Airport.

The work will include turning the existing approach road to the terminal building into a dual carriageway, remodel the set-down area and the reposition of the coach terminal around the airport.

Airport authorities want to increase capacity from 12m to 18m passengers by 2026.

The company which is part of the Lagan Group will engineer and construct the landside infrastructure and transport facilities at the airport in what is a major slice of the overall £100m project.

Whitemountain managing director Mark Kelly described the work as ‘significant.’

“The work we are delivering will be designed to improve access, circulation and parking facilities,” he said. “This is necessary to support the terminal expansion project and is at the centre of a wider strategy to improve passenger and airside facilities.

“These types of civil engineering contacts are significant for the company in its growth across the UK and further afield. With extensive experience in road construction and the airport sector, our expertise and ability to deliver quality projects on time positions us very well within the marketplace.”

Chief Executive LLA Nick Barton said: “The work to widen the link road, remodel our bus terminal and increase car parking space is essential to our vision to transform the airport. Alongside major improvements to the terminal, the work will not only increase LLA’s capacity by 50 per cent to 18 million passengers per year by 2026, but also ensure that we deliver the best possible experience for our passengers.”

The airport carried 10.5 million passengers in 2014 and has flights departing to more than 100 destinations across Europe, Africa, and Asia.
