Local man killed

Ballymena Deputy Mayor James McClean has described the death of a 32-year-old motorcyclist on Monday following a two-vehicle collision on the Woodtown Road as “an utter tragedy”.

The deceased has been named locally as 32-year-old Russell Cairns. Cllr McClean said he had been deeply saddened by the loss of a life on local roads.

He said he had been driving from his home towards Galgorm on Monday and had been diverted away from the scene at Woodtown Road by police.

“I was very sorry to later hear that a young man had lost his life. My thoughts and prayers are with the deceased’s family.”

The road was closed for most of the day and traffic diversions were in place between the Sand Road and Old Park Road following the collision which happened at around 9.25am on Monday. Police have appealed for witnesses.
