Local man killed in Drogheda crash

The mayor of Drogheda has extended his sympathies to the family of lorry driver Richard Patterson, from the Coleraine/Castlerock area, who was killed after a collision with a van on the M1 motorway in Co Louth on Thursday afternoon.

Mayor Kevin Callan said about 50 emergency services personnel attended the scene to deal with the crash which happened on the M1 southbound close to Junction 11 near Monasterboice in Drogheda, at 12:45pm.

It’s understood that the lorry collided with a van that was parked on the hard shoulder as it had broken down. The lorry then turned onto its side onto an embankment.

Mr Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda for a post-mortem examination.

Gardai, the fire service and the ambulance service attended the scene which was immediately closed to traffic as a Garda forensic team investigated the circumstances of the collision.

“Everybody in the town is shocked to hear the news,” said Drogheda mayor, Kevin Callan.

“Number one that there was a crash of this size, but also the fact that somebody has lost their life.

“I think I speak on behalf of everyone in Drogheda when we extend our sympathies, and our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”
