Local men on Rusty Nuts Rally

Two Lurgan men took to the roads recently to take part in the Rusty Nuts Rally NI, which raised a magnificent £23,191 for local charity Cancer Focus Northern Ireland.

Teams from all over Northern Ireland revived their banger cars and drove over 200 miles in a weekend completing a range of challenges and raising money for Cancer Focus NI along the way, in a bid to win the coveted Rusty Nuts Rally trophy.

The rally, in cars worth £500 or less, took place across the North Coast, Fermanagh, Tyrone, Armagh and Down along the route.

Lurgan was represented by Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, which comprised of Paul Dargan and Gareth McCue.

Paul said: “We were delighted to take part in the Rusty Nuts Rally and we would like to thank everyone from the Lurgan area who donated to this wonderful cause. The Rusty Nuts Rally was a fantastic weekend and I would encourage anyone interested in the event to get involved next year.”

The Rusty Nuts Rally was spearheaded by Portadown’s Hannah Rodgers and Kieran O’Neill. Hannah said: “We were delighted to get across the finish line after what was a great three days’ of events. I would like to personally thank everyone who donated to the Rusty Nuts Rally, and a special word of thanks to all our sponsors without whom this challenge simply couldn’t take place, namely Todds Leap Activity Centre, Eddie Irvine Sports Centre, Sheep Island View Hostel, ASR Graphics, and Alltrak Rallysport.

Kieran added, “Thank you to each of the magnificent teams who entered, our support crew and everyone who assisted us during the event.”

Cancer Focus NI provides a wide range of services for Northern Ireland cancer patients and their families. However the money raised from the Rusty Nuts Rally will be used to help fund Cancer Focus NI’s Man Van service.

Community Fundraiser Eoin Treanor said “The £23,191 raised by the rally will help us continue funding our Man Van, which brings lifesaving messages to our local community and workplaces, helping to lower the risk of cancer. Men can have their body composition and measurements assessed, blood pressure and blood glucose checked, and get one-to-one advice.”
