Local owner wins at Crufts

A BALLYMENA painter and decorator and Storm, a five-year-old Newfoundland, proved every dog does have its day after walking away with a top prize at dfs Crufts.

Storm was among 21,500 healthy, happy dogs at Crufts, presented by the Kennel Club, and claimed the prestigious best of breed award at Birmingham’s NEC last weekend.

Co-owner William Dobbin showed nerves of steel with Storm beating off competition from over 221 other entries to scoop the coveted prize before going on to compete for best in group.

They finished second overall in the Working category and Mr Dobbin, 58, couldn’t hide his delight at Storm’s efforts on the 120th anniversary of Crufts.

“We won Working group in 2003 so it’s nice to be back up at the top doing well. Crufts is the biggest event of them all so we’re very proud of Storm,” said Mr Dobbin.

“His daughter picked up the bitch ticket as well so all it’s been a wonderful day for a very beautiful dog. Storm handled the occasion extremely well, he’s got a very calm temperament so Crufts and the big crowds never get too much for him.”
