Local people are invited to support ‘Drumming for Heroes’ event

MEMBERS from the Orange Order are on an epic journey around the British Isles to raise money in support of the ‘Help for Heroes’ charity helping injured service personnel and they will be stopping off in Hillsborough for a well earned rest on Friday afternoon.

The ‘Drumming for Heroes’ initiative involves getting a Lambeg drum from the landing place of King William III at Brixham in Devon, up through England then Scotland before crossing the Channel and all the way to the Boyne Heritage Centre at Drogheda.

The three lodges involved are William Alexander Memorial LOL 1689 (London), Sons of Conquerors LOL 162 (Glasgow) and Bible & Crown Defenders LOL 423 (Banbridge).

The team and the drum will arrive in Hillsborough on Friday (June 10) at approximately 12noon, when Hillsborough District 19 will welcome them and provide refreshments at the village Court House.

Local people are being invited along to support the charity event and they will also receive a free cup of tea.

To date Drumming for Heroes has raised £44,000 on behalf of Help for Heroes and it is hoped local people will be able to boost this total further on Friday.

The first leg of the journey has been completed by members of London LOL 1689 who took the drum to Exeter, the Houses of Parliament in London, Hereford, Manchester and Liverpool, raising funds at various functions and events along the way.
