Local people urged to join in with the spirit of the Games

North Belfast MP Nigel Dodds has urged local people to get behind the London 2012 Olympic Games which begin tomorrow, (Friday, July 27).

Mr Dodds met London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games (LOCOG) Chair Seb Coe and Olympian Jonathan Edwards CBE at a reception in Parliament recently to hear more about the 50 ways people can join in and get involved with the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Following the great community spirit displayed when hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets to welcome the Olympic Flame across the country, LOCOG is keen ensure that no-one misses the opportunity of a lifetime to be part of London 2012.

With suggestions for free ways to get involved, activities to organise with friends and family, London 2012 Festival events to attend, and even ways to get involved without leaving the comfort of your home, there is something out there for everybody. Whether it’s holding an Opening Night In and inviting family and friends round to watch the Opening Ceremony on TV or sending a message of support to Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes, people across the country are coming together to join in and get involved in the Games.

Mr Dodds said: “As we reach the final strait to the Games, it’s time for everybody to start thinking how they can play their part and celebrate what is going to be an incredible summer. The list of 50 ways to get involved has some great ideas. There is something in it for everyone. I am urging everyone to join in with the celebrations this summer and make the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Seb Coe, Chair of LOCOG added: “The Jubilee celebrations and the incredible welcome given to the Olympic Torch Relay have shown the great community spirit of British people and their enthusiasm to get involved with big events. By releasing this list, we want to demonstrate that whatever your interests, there is a way for you to be part of London 2012.”
