Local police officers in landmark drugs bust

A LANDMARK drugs bust last summer saw cops in Londonderry record the second largest seizure of drugs in the province in 2009/10.

PSNI in Foyle seized 947,083 (street value) of drugs over the year. This was a greater amount than anywhere bar East Belfast where 1,133,322 of drugs - mostly cannabis and cocaine - was seized.

The most successful drug seizure of the year in Londonderry was the capture of 7.972kg of heroin last summer. But police also seized 7.5kg of speed; two speed wraps; 200 speed tablets; 1.7kg of hash; 2.3kg of grass; 15 joints; 25 cannabis plants; 464g of cocaine; one cocaine wrap; 375 LSD microdots; and 705 ecstasy tablets over the year. Police recorded 148 drug related incidents over the year.

Police in Limavady seized drugs with a street value of 360,134 whilst colleagues in Strabane seized drugs worth 1,839 - the lowest amount in the whole of Northern Ireland.
