Local pupils enjoy eco-schools event

PUPILS from Pond Park Primary and Crumlin Integrated joined pupils from other eco-schools in Northern Ireland in Newry on February 2 to celebrate their achievements.

The packed event, which was supported by the Department of the Environment and sponsored by Newry and Mourne District Council, attracted over 500 people who participated in workshops and activities and honoured the 800th school to join the programme with an award. The Eco-schools programme, sponsored by Airtricity, aims to make environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of a school, endeavouring to develop responsible attitudes and commitment, both at home and in the wider community.  Its participatory approach and combination of learning and action makes it an ideal way for schools to begin improving the environments of schools and their local communities, and of influencing the lives of young people, school staff and families.
