Local schools dig deep with tree-mendous effort

PUPILS from St John’s and Gilford primary schools will be joining forces with Banbridge District Council to undertake the planting of a veritable forest of young trees in the grounds of Gilford Community Centre on Thursday 6 December.

The council have been provided with 420 saplings as part Woodland Trust Jubilee Planting Scheme in which they aim to plant six million trees to help restore the nation’s native woodlands. So far over three million trees have already been planted as part of this initiative.

The young saplings are made up of hawthorn, hazel, silver birch, dogwood, wild cherry and rowan. All the trees are native species which will help to enhance local biodiversity while providing a new habitat for many invertebrates, small mammals and birds plus producing year round colour for everyone to enjoy for many generations to come.

The collection of trees also includes one special oak sapling has been which has been grown from a seed collected on one of the Royal estates.

The council are also inviting any other green fingered groups or individuals to come along to Gilford Community Centre at 12 noon on Thursday 6 December to help muck in and be part of this popular planting party.
