Local schools go green!

The competition, launched by the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA) and Ulster University, aims to promote renewable energy and environmental sustainability awareness to schools.

Eco-friendly year 12-14 students at each school have been tasked with assessing the ‘green’ credentials of their school using measuring equipment provided by Ulster University; looking at aspects such as energy usage; potential energy savings and then drafting a report based on their findings.

An award ceremony to announce the winning school will take place at Ulster University, Jordanstown at the end of April 2015.

The ‘Green Schools NI’ competition has been designed to engage students from all STEM subjects but in particular CCEA’s new GCE in Environmental Technology. The qualification, which launched in 2013 and is due for first award in Summer 2015, was developed as a result of wide consultation with external stakeholders, to include schools and universities, who believe that this is the type of course that will help to bring growth and sustainability to the NI economy.

Local schools taking part include Ballymoney High School and Cross and Passion College, Ballycastle.
