Local schools receive prizes for Textile competition

BALLYKEEL Primary School and Clough Community Playgroup pupils were recently rewarded for their participation in the first ever Cash for Clobber Eco-Schools textile recycling competition.

The new project launched in the final school term encouraged local schools to recycle clothes and textiles and raise young people’s awareness on the impact of recycling and waste on the environment.

Ballykeel Primary school achieved the top results in the challenge category for schools with more than 250 pupils.

Speaking at a special prize presentation where both schools received a cheque for 1500, Patrick McCormack from Cookstown Textile Recycling said: “It has been extremely encouraging to see the number of pupils participating in this competition and learning about the benefits of recycling and waste. The children are learning valuable lessons which they can take home to their family and friends.

“We would like to congratulate and thank all the schools who have taken part in the competition and to encourage every school in the country to be on the lookout for next years follow up.”

Colin Latham, Eco-Schools Manager said: “The Cash for Clobber Eco-Schools competition has been an exciting competition for schools to participate in and at the same time has enabled schools to educate children further on the positive reason for recycling unused textiles and the whole topic of waste.

This is an important aspect of the Eco-Schools programme, in almost every school our Eco-Schools Assessors go into we see examples of textile recycling and many schools who have taken part in the competition have been able to use the waste and recycling lessons that they have learned as evidence towards their Eco-Schools Green Flag status which is an internationally recognized and prestigious award.
