The project is to add eight sculptures to the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) owned Belshaws Quarry National Nature Reserve on Benson’s Road to the site.

At the sculptor launch last week, John Belshaw the WDCA Chairperson said: “This project idea has been the best part of a year in the making and as a community group that has a focus on environmental matters this project fits in with our core reason for being. We are especially pleased now to announce the names of the six sculptors in what possibly has already been termed a unique project within Ireland and possibly even Europe.

“Quite an extensive sourcing exercise was put in place with over 40 sculptors showing initial expressions of interest to what is increasingly being realised as a unique art project.

“This site has just been raised in status to that of an Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI) due to the uniquely accessible series of geological features. Our own ‘tour’ leaflet, “Visit The Limestone Way”, shows off the site and other features in our area but this project really takes things to a completely different level.”

WDCA has also launched a series of “Design A Sculpture” workshops to be held on Saturday, February 25 and March 4.

The introduction will also include a brief tour of the site itself starting at 10am on February 25 followed by the first part of the workshop at The Little Green Allottments, 3F Whitemountain Rd. More information on the associations’ activities can be found at www.whitemountain.org.uk
