Local sports pavilions to be replaced

A UUP councillor has welcomed council moves to replace the sports pavilions at Larne's Sandy Bay and the Town Park.

Larne Lough representative Andy Wilson said that the need to replace the paviions was highlighted in a sports strategy published by Larne Borough Council a decade ago, and that he had been campaigning on the issue since his election to the new supercouncil.

“The projects have been put into category two on the capital project list presented to council on Monday April 4,” he said.

“The Chief Executive confirmed to the council that category two projects will commence in this new financial year.

“The need for replacement was identified many years ago. The Sandy Bay changing rooms were falling down and not fit for purpose when I used them regularly when playing for the Rugby Club 20 years ago!

“In terms of the Town Park, replacement is long overdue, particularly given the adjacent improved facilities with the children’s playpark and AstroTurf tennis courts.

“The toilet facilities at the Old Town Park have been closed due to vandalism for a considerable time now.”
