Local teachers await final results for 2010 Teaching Awards

A NUMBER of local teachers are eagerly awaiting their final results after they were selected as finalists at the 2010 Teaching Awards, which will be held at The Waterfront Hall, Belfast on Tuesday June 8.

Exceptional teachers from across the Lisburn area will be among a host of education stars from schools across Northern Ireland who will shine at the awards.

Amongst those nominated are Mrs Sharon Beattie from Dromore Nursery School for the NCSL Award for Headteacher of the Year in a Primary School, Miss Gillian McGarry of Wallace High School, Lisburn for the DfE Award for Enterprise, Mrs Kathryn McMurray from Oakwood Integrated Primary School for the TDA Award for Teaching Assistant of the Year, Mr Colm McMullan of St. Joseph's Primary School, Crumlin for the Royal Air Force Award for Teacher of the Year in a Primary School and Ballymacrickett Primary School and Nursery Unit, Crumlin and Fleming Fulton School, Belfast for the Award for Outstanding School Team of the Year.

The finalists, in 11 categories, will be cheered on by pupils, parents and colleagues at a prestigious event hosted by BBC presenter Donna Traynor.

Celebrating twelve years of recognition for unsung heroes, the Teaching Awards will focus on finalists - headteachers, teachers, teaching assistants, governors, school teams and sustainable schools - from across Northern Ireland. Each of the 11 winners will receive a Plato - the Teaching Awards symbol of excellence in education. Distinctions and commendations will also be presented.

Congratulating the shortlisted finalists, Caroline Evans, chief executive of the Teaching Awards said: "This is a record year for the Teaching Awards with more than 9,200 nominations. Each and every one has been thanked for making a difference to the lives of children and young people. Now the finalists have been chosen and our judges have visited all their schools. Our summer ceremonies are a terrific celebration of all that is good in education and I am excited to be meeting the new Class of 2010. Good luck everyone and well done for coming this far."
