17 young people – including a number from East Antrim – were part of a group on an European trip with the Education Authority, narrowly missing the blast at the airport.

An Education Authority spokesperson said: “A group of young people taking part in an Education Authority Youth Service trip to Brussels accompanied by three EA Officers had arrived at Brussels airport to catch their flight home around the time of the explosion this morning.

“No one was injured and the group was immediately moved to a safe area where direct contact was made with the Authority and the parents of the young people.

“The Authority remains in constant contact with the Officers and we are satisfied that all are safe and well. Regular updates are being provided to parents.

“Alternative travel arrangements have been put in place and it is expected that the group will return home later tonight.

“The Authority is arranging for counselling and support to be available for all members of the group on their return”.
