Local trio in Grand Canyon adventure

IT was the start of an exciting ten days for three Coleraine folk, last Saturday, as they set off to embark on a charity trek through the Grand Canyon for Action Cancer.

Heather and Matthew Magee and Trevor Culberton set off to join 22 other participants for the ten day trek in aid of Northern Ireland’s leading local cancer charity, Action Cancer.

The trek is Heather’s fifth, to date she has raised over 16,000 for Action Cancer. Her son Matthew is joining her on the trip, for what will be his frist overseas trek.

Trevor Culberton is also no stranger to Action Cancer treks. Trek Grand Canyon will be his fourth, bringing his total fundraising to 13,800 and he has already signed up for next years African Tribal Trek!

The group will take on extreme desert temperatures of over 30 degrees and trek for continuous days over uneven and rough terrain exploring the most remote areas in one of the USA’s oldest national Parks.

The trek route passes through the Canyon’s only village, Supai, inhabited by the Havasu people who inhabit the Grand Canyon. They will certainly notice the difference in comparison to Coleraine as there are no cars in the community and the mail arrives by pack horse!

Events and PR Officer, Leigh Chamberlain said: “Trevor and Heather are amazing loyal supporters of Action Cancer, and I am delighted they have continued their support with trek grand canyon. It’s also great to have Matthew on board and I hope he enjoys his challenge.”
