Local UDR Association holds parade and wreath laying

The parade and service was held to honour those who served with the UDR during the Troubles, and particularly to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

For 22 years, through some of the darkest days of the Troubles, more than 50,000 men and women from all walks of life served in the ranks of the UDR.

In all, over 260 serving and former members were killed, and almost 500 seriously wounded, many of them off-duty at their homes or workplaces.

The parade left the Royal British Legion in Sackville Street at 1.30pm.

The parade route was Wallace Avenue, Seymour Street, Castle Street and round to the UDR/Greenfinch sculpture in Lisburn City Centre at approx 2.00pm where a wreath was laid and Lagan Valley MP Jeffrey Donaldson, a former UDR corporal, gave a fitting tribute to those who served and remembered the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.

At approximately 2.15pm the parade marched round the Linen Centre, down Railway Street and back to the Royal British Legion for dispersal.
