Locals celebrate Volunteer Day

To mark International Volunteer Day in the Causeway area, the Volunteer Centre organised an evening of food and entertainment in the Lodge Hotel.

Ann McNickle chair told those present that the local centre has ‘an excellent record’ of attracting a very diverse range of people into volunteering.

Commenting further she said: “Last year 938 volunteers registered with Causeway Volunteer Centre: 35% were male, 65% were female, 20% were over 50, 25% were under 25, 35% were unemployed, 18% had a disability, 12% were from NR areas and 15% were from ethnic minority backgrounds.

“Other than the fact that more women volunteer than men in the Causeway area all the other figures show a very positive reflection on the demographics of the area. There’s nobody left out,” she said.

The Mayor councillor Michele Knight-McQuillan praised the work of local volunteers and commented on how important volunteering is to people who would otherwise find it hard to engage with the community.

The Centre Centre welcomes new volunteers regardless of background.
