Stephen Greenaway died soon after his Red MG ZR car crashed into the pillar of a house on the Red Lion Rd near Kilmore at around 1am on Wednesday morning.

A man who lives close to the scene said he heard a loud crash at around 1am.

“I went out to see what happened and I saw a car. I went over to help,” said the local man who prefered not to be named.

He described how he had called the ambulance and two arrived from Portadown and Armagh soon after he called.

However he and a local nurse tried to help the man in the car until the ambulance arrived.

He explained the nurse believed the man had stopped breathing and he helped take Mr Greenaway out of the car so she could help him.

“It’s an awful tragedy,” he said, adding that it is the first time in his memory anyone has died in an accident on that stretch of the road.

Mr Greenaway was from the Mullenakill area between Annaghmore and Dungannon.

He was a former pupil of Drumglass High School in Dungannon.

The 38-year-old is the 27th person to die on Northern Ireland’s roads this year.

Local DUP councillor Jonathan Buckley, described Mr Greenaway as a distant cousin of his family.

“He and his family are well connected to the community outside Dungannon and his death will send shockwaves around the community.

“I know the community is quite close and will rally around the family in this difficult time.”

Inspector Peter Moneypenny said: “Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the collision and I would appeal to anyone who was driving on the Red Lion Road at the time and may have witnessed the collision, or anyone who has information that could assist in our investigation, to contact police on 101.”
