London maestro to bring Wall2Wall of sound to city

YOUNG musicians in Londonderry are in for a treat as Detta Danford from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, is set to facilitate the City of Hope Collective Summer Workshop run by Wall2Wall Music.

The five days workshop will take place in St. Cecilia’s College, over 18-22 July and is open to young musicians of all levels and backgrounds aged 14 to 19, including instrumentalists, singers and composers, as well as musicians with additional skills such as drama, dance, film and digital technology.

Detta Danford studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where she now tutors on the Masters in Music Leadership course.

Her extensive experience as a workshop leader has led her to run workshops and creative projects across the globe from Singapore to the Netherlands.

She currently co-leads Future Band, a Guildhall Connect ensemble for young people aged 8 to 18 and has great experience in facilitating workshops for young musicians. Detta is also a flautist and a composer, and has recently been involved in collaborative projects with Nitin Sawhney and co-led a cross arts project in The Gambia.

Sarah Murphy, director of Wall2Wall Music, says: “Wall2Wall Music has been building connections with Guildhall School of Music and Drama in the City of London for some years now and we are delighted to be welcoming Detta to lead the City of Hope Collective Summer Workshop.

“It’s a great opportunity for young people from our city to work alongside a leading professional musician on her first visit to Derry/Londonderry.”

Members of the City of Hope Collective are looking forward to meeting Detta in July as they recall their best memories of past events.

“I joined the City of Hope Collective in 2009 and I am now one of the few original members left. Working with other young musicians my age has been a great experience and the friends I have made have been great. I’m looking forward to the summer workshop and I can’t wait to work with new musicians” says Andy.

“My best experience of the City of Hope Collective was performing on the Shoreditch stage, London, because we had all worked so hard to get there. The best part was working together with experienced musicians to create new pieces of music” adds Conor.
