Londonderry bombers despicable cowards: councillor

LONDONDERRY councillor Mark Durkan says the pipe bombers who targetted a house in the Glen area of the city this morning are despicable cowards.

The SDLP councillor Mark H. Durkan has said children's were put at risk by the bomb attack.

Detectives in Foyle said they were investigating the attack at a house in the Hawthorn Drive area around 1am (25th).

The device was thrown at the front door causing some damage. A couple and two children were in the house at the however fortunately no one was injured.

Speaking from the scene, the Northland Councillor said: "This is a cowardly and despicable attack on innocent children and indeed all the people of Hawthorne Drive.

"Worryingly the pipe bomb exploded inside the house and has caused extensive shrapnel damage to the house and to neighbouring properties.

"This attack is beyond justification and it is extremely fortunate that no one was seriously injured or killed by the actions of these thugs.

"These pipe bombers have no respect whatsoever for the sanctity of human life and belong behind bars.

"This can only be achieved if the community work with police and pass on any information about this incident to them as a matter of urgency."

Army Technical Oiffcers attended the scene. Police are keen to speak to anyone who saw suspicious persons or vehicles in the area prior to the attack.
