Londonderry director poised to make wide-release sci-fi thriller

Speaking to the trade journal, Screen International, Mr Fingleton, said: “The film will be one that really wide international audiences will see. It’s a thriller set in the very fear near future.”

The local director has been nominated for the BAFTA for ‘Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer’ for ‘The Survivalist,’ which features Foyle School of Speech and Drama graduate and Londonderry native Andrew Simpson alongside an impressive cast including Olwen Fouéré, Mia Goth and Martin McCann, and was well-received when it opened at Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Film Festival last year,

“Anything that can bring attention to our work gives me gratitude. To be nominated for this particular award is one of the few ways of raising the profile of a film that’s being made outside the system,” he said.

The film’s being screened from February 5, at the Queen’s Film Theatre, before opening nationwide in Britain and Ireland in select cinemas and premium video-on-demand (VOD) on February 12.

Mr Fingleton was born in Londonderry, but now divides his time between Enniskillen and London.
