Londonderry man in running for senior Orange post

THE Grand Master of the City of Londonderry Grand Orange Lodge is today in the running for the position of Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland.

Victor Wray will face a poll consisting of delegates from the institution across the island this morning in County Londonderry.

A member of the Orange Order for over 40 years, Mr Wray hails from the Glen district of Londonderry originally and in fact joined the institution there-at Richmond Hall off Eden Terrace. The Deputy Grand Master candidate became City Grand Master four years ago having succeeded Gerard Wallace.

If successful Victor Wray could become part of a leadership team that will consist of men from the North West for the first time in many decades.

The favourite to succeed Robert Saulters as Grand Master of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland is Edward Stephenson who comes from Ardstraw in Co Tyrone. The main challengers for the top post are believed to be the County Armagh Grand Master, Denis Watson and the Rev Stephen Dickinson.

Victor Wray has been noted for his policies in attempting to make July 12 celebrations open to both sides of the community and believes the Order has a key role to play in solving the remaining difficulties around parading.
