Londonderry's suicide rate amongst highest in Northern Ireland

NINETY-TWO people killed themselves in Londonderry over the past five years.

Londonderry has one of the highest suicide rates in Northern Ireland according to newly released statistics.

The number of people registered as having died as a result of suicide in the Foyle area was 12 in 2005; 28 in 2006; 14 in 2007; 20 in 2008; and 18 in 2009.

In East Londonderry the suicide toll was 55 and in West Tyrone it was 82.

This brings the number of people known to have taken their own lives in the North West over the past five years to 229.

There were 1,288 suicides in Northern Ireland during the same period.

Minister of Finance and Personnel Sammy Wilson outlined the figures in response to an Assembly Question.

The figures refer to the number of deaths registered due to either "suicide and self-inflicted injury" or "undetermined injury whether accidentally or purposefully inflicted."
