“The whole of Derry and the North West is united in grief and a continuing sense of shock at the devastating loss from such a tragedy,” he said.

“I know that the Daniels and McGrotty families appreciate the sympathy and support which has been shown right across the community and far more widely.

“They also have our admiration for the strength and spirit they are showing in the midst of utterly devastating family loss.

“Their tragedy and the heroic intervention by Davitt Walsh have deeply touched people further away.

“In the House of Commons this week so many MPs from England, Scotland and Wales made a point of sharing with me their deep sense of shock and sadness, as well as their sincere condolences.

“In all of the family settings that Easter brings, our special thoughts will be for Louise and the Daniels and McGrotty families – and everyone will want to offer them every support and solidarity as they try to take their lives forward after such cruel bereavement,” said Mr Durkan.
