Long standing record broken at sports day

The Annual Sports Day at St Paul’s Junior High School last week, might have started off in rather dull conditions, but it certainly finished in spectacular fashion as one of the school’s oldest Athletic records fell after almost 40 years.

In 1975, Jim McIlwaine, Gerard Creaney, John McInerney and the late Stephen McCann combined to win the Year 10 4 X 100m Relay in a time of 54.9. Since then, many teams were coached and cajoled in an effort to beat that time, but it remained elusive until this year.

In the last race of the day, Rioghan Meehan, Shea Geraghty and Callum Magee sped around the track before transferring the baton on the final leg to Jack Conlon. As Conlon flashed over the line, all eyes were transferred to the stopwatch which showed that they had shaved 0.9 of a second off the old time.

First to congratulate them was Jim McIlwaine, who jokingly reminded them that himself, John, Stephen and Noel McAlernon had set the Year 11 record the following year and challenged them to beat that one as well.

It was a memorable day as well for Rioghan Crawford who collected the Year 8 Athlete Award, Tom Lavery, the Year 9 Award while Jack Haddock collected the Best Athlete Award for Year 10.
