Look after your house this winter

ARE you going away? Will your home be empty at any time during the winter? If so, the Housing Executive and housing associations are advising you to keep your home warm while you are away.

A Housing Executive spokesperson explained: “As the Christmas and New Year holidays approach, many people are making plans to visit their families or go on holiday. Last year, however, some householders returned to find their home and possessions were damaged as a result of burst water pipes due to the freezing conditions.

“Don’t let this happen to you. It’s important to look after your home, particularly when you are away.

“To help prevent your pipes from freezing or bursting, you need to keep your home warm. You can do this by setting the timer for your heating to come on for a short time each day or ask a neighbour or member of your family to come in and turn your heating on.

“If you know of a Housing Executive or housing association property that is not occupied, please let us know.”

Housing Executive tenants can contact the Housing Executive for further information by telephoning 03448 920 901 or log on to www.nihe.gov.uk.

Housing association tenants should contact their housing association directly.
