Looking back... Boycott of Irish goods

The recently-formed Larne branch of the Ulster Clubs was set to distribute thousands of leaflets in March 1986 urging shoppers to boycott Republican goods.

Ald Jack McKee, who had been asked to act as chairman until the group got off the ground properly, announced that the handout would take place.

The Ulster Clubs had set up a number of branches in towns throughout the Province and Ald McKee explained that because of strong local opposition to the Anglo Irish deal, it was felt that a branch should be established in Larne.

He said: “There is a need for a group which would bring together all the other groups campaigning against the deal.”
