Looking back... Larne marks 50 years since VE Day

The events began with a church parade and service in the town. The Royal British Legion had called on ex-servicemen who were not members, as well as civilian personnel to join them for the event.

The commemorative events were brought to an end with the firing of two flares over the harbour area.

The first maroon was fired at 8.38pm, signalling the start of a two minute’s silence in memory of those who had made the supreme sacrifice in the Second World War.

A second maroon was then fired at 8.40pm. A beacon was set alight on Ferris Point.

This was one of hundreds across the British Isles, which marked the anniversary.

It was clearly visible from coastal areas north of Islandmagee.
