Lorry driver gets four week driving ban

A BALLYMONEY lorry driver had a driving ban restricted to four weeks so he can use up his holiday entitlement during that period and ensure he keeps his job.

Jonathan Dowie (41), of Swallow Court, detected driving a lorry at 55mph in a 60mph zone at Ballybogey Road but the vehicle was restricted to 40mph.

He had already nine penalty points and the additional three points for the speed offence put him on 12 which brings a ban.

North Antrim Magistrates Court in Coleraine was told last Wednesday his employer said he could keep his job if there was a small disqualification and he could use up the ban time as holidays.

District Judge Richard Wilson said it would be unfortunate for Dowie to lose his livelihood as exceeding the speed of the vehicle was “not the most heinous crime” and he fined him 100 and give him a four weeks ban.
