Lost letter causes concern

COUNCILLOR Daithi McKay has questioned why a letter about the erection of street nameplates in a language other than English was not received by Ballymoney Borough Council.

During a recent Full Council meeting, members were made aware that the letter from the Equality Commission dated December 8 was sent but never arrived.

The report from a recent Health and Environmental Committee stated: 'Following Councils meeting on 2nd November 2009, correspondence was addressed to the Chief Executive of the Equality Commission as required, inviting its representatives to address the Committee on issues relating to the naming of streets in a language other than English (Irish).

'Although a written response was issued dated 8th December, this was not received then, a matter which has now been rectified. This letter, on behalf of the Equality Commission was circulated.'

In response Cllr McKay asked the Director: "So what happened was the letter never posted, lost in the post or by us? It seems quite strange."

The Director explained: "There is no record of the letter entering Council offices, so we don't know what happened. However the issue has been rectified and the letter was emailed in. I just wanted to explain why this issue is only coming before Council now."
