Loughgiel support group launch booklet for people bereaved through suicide

THE Northern Heath and Social Care Trust launched a booklet 'Bereaved through suicide - A useful guide following your loss'. The booklet deals with the feelings of loss people may have and discusses practical issues surrounding bereavement through suicide.

Danielle Gallagher, Bereaved by Suicide Project Worker for the Northern Trust area, said: "When someone dies by suicide, many people are affected. Parents, partners, relatives and friends all feel the pain. People bereaved by suicide need to know that there is a range of services available to support them through the extreme circumstances and reactions they may experience.

"When someone is bereaved through suicide not only do they have to deal with a range of emotions, but they will also need to take practical issue into consideration and follow process. Following a suicide there will be an investigation into the death, people to notify and a funeral to organise. This booklet takes the family through the process, looking at what's involved in the police, coroner's investigation, to making the funeral arrangements and to coping with the aftermath.

"The aim of this booklet is to give advice and support to those bereaved at a time when they are at their most vulnerable and alone. As well as giving advice the booklet gives contact details for the bereaved by suicide project worker, support groups and includes useful contact details for other organisations that can help.

"The booklet will be distributed to community and voluntary groups, members of the clergy, the PSNI and the emergency services. These will then be available to the bereaved and to those working with the bereaved."

Dealing with bereavement through suicide is challenging because of the range and depth of emotions different people will experience. These are often accompanied by questions as to 'why' it has happened. By raising awareness of the help available, it is hoped the Bereaved by Suicide Project will also encourage people who are finding it hard to cope to seek support.
