Loyalist discussion in Dervock

DERVOCK has a reputation for being a staunch loyalist village - the demographics being 89.9 % from a Protestant background, 7.2% from a Catholic background (NINIS/NISRA) given rise to the label 'Single Identity'.

Therefore the recent discussion in Dervock; which looked at the generic application of Loyalism within the broad based family of Unionism indeed illustrated the diverse range of attitudes towards what is an emotive subject.

The audience listened attentively as Nigel Gardiner (EPIC, North Ulster) provided political analysis on a ‘Shared Society’ for Northern Ireland, working-class unionism, rehabilitation of ex-prisoners, the origin of the word ‘Loyalist’ etc.

Nigel apologised for David Malcolm (UPRG – Londonderry) absence from the discussions to provide a collective determination of UPRGs strategy on the way forward.

After light refreshments, members of the audience - reminisce of TV’s ‘Question Time’ debated issues such as “whether loyalists (paramilitaries) should be addressed as combatants or terrorists”? “What contribution would Loyalist/Protestants/Unionist have in the preparation for the City of Culture 2013 celebrations (Regeneration)”?

Frankie Cunningham (Chairperson) commented, “These series of workshops have certainly provoked discussions that has made us realise that we (intra-community) must develop a better understanding of our history and cultural heritage of the area; which I hope will provide a tool for promoting dialogue between people of different faith and cultural backgrounds, with the potential of a future political leader, youth worker?

“The next event (November 5th – Mandos at The North Irish Horse Inn) looks at the contribution both communities (North & South) made during WWI and WWII and other conflicts within our society.

“We wish to acknowledge the contribution made to this programme from the EU's Peace III programme, which is managed for the Special EU Programme body by the North East PEACE III Partnership.”
